Differentiated Instruction Series
Session 1:
Supporting the Montco Student: In the Classroom and Beyond
Overview: Join us for an hour presentation with a half-hour discussion with your colleague guest speakers on how to support the Montco student. Students at Montco come with a variety of experiences and needs. Come to learn and discuss how to support our students ranging from English as a second language to neurodiverse students and all students in-between.
Presenters: Dr. Mary-Kate Najarian, Dr. Bridget Haines-Frank, Dr. Steve Baron, Michael Baron, Monica LaCosta, and Kimberly Springfield
Learning Objectives:
- Explore and discuss the student population at Montco.
- Explore and discuss assisting the student population in the classroom.
- Identify key traits of differentiated instruction.
- Identify the student elements of differentiated instruction.
Session 2:
Empowering Faculty: Strategies for Inclusive and Effective Teaching
This professional development session is designed to equip faculty with the skills to tailor their teaching strategies for diverse student needs, enhancing inclusivity and engagement in the classroom. Participants will be empowered with strategies to recognize and address the diverse backgrounds and readiness levels of their students, enhancing overall classroom inclusivity and effectiveness.
By the end of this session, particpations will be able to:
- Recognize How Different Backgrounds Impact Student Readiness
- Gain an understanding of how various cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds influence student readiness and classroom dynamics.
- Differentiate Course Content to Accommodate Varied Readiness Levels
- Identify opportunities and develop strategies to modify course content and teaching methods, ensuring that all students can engage with the material in a way that suits their individual readiness levels.
- Provide Information on Supplemental Instruction Opportunities
- Learn about various supplemental instruction opportunities available outside the classroom, and how to effectively communicate these resources to students to support their learning and development.
- Distinguish Learning Styles from Learning Preferences
- Understand the critical differences between these concepts and how they impact teaching and learning.
- Identify Different Modalities for Information Acquisition
- Recognize various ways students obtain information, such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading/writing modalities.
- Connect Learning Preferences to UDL Principles
- Explore how to integrate students learning preferences into the Universal Design for Learning framework to create a more inclusive learning environment.
- Adapt Course Materials for Diverse Preferences
- Gain practical strategies for modifying course materials and teaching methods to address different learning preferences, ensuring all students have equal opportunities to succeed.
Getting Started with Canvas
This will be an introductory session on how to get started with Canvas. Topics covered in this session will include:
- Accessing and logging into Canvas
- Canvas Navigation Basics
- Suggestions on how to approach reviewing and updating your courses
- Basics of adding and re-arranging content

Gradebook and Rubrics
This session will cover setting up your gradebook and using rubrics. Topics covered in this session will include:
- Setting up gradebook
- Managing categories
- Setting up Weighted Total

Grading and SpeedGrader
This session will cover to how grade assessments in Canvas and the use of SpeedGrader. Topics covered in this session will include:
- Grading each assignment type (assignment, quiz, etc)

Kahoot!
This session will cover how to use Kahoot! in the classroom. It will include:

This session will cover Canvas quizzes and test banks. Topics covered in this session will include:
- Reviewing Quizzes from Blackboard

This session will show what a course looks like from the student view. This will allow you to better understand students questions about their experience. Topics covered in this session will include:

- Grade Predictor tool
Turnitin (replacement for SafeAssign) and Draft Coach
This session will demonstrate how to use TunritIn (the replacement for SafeAssign) as a faculty member and how to interpret the scores. This includes setting up an assignment with Turnitin. Draft Coach, an interactive online coach for citations, grammar, and similarity will be demonstrated. Draft Coach is available for both faculty and students.
Verity (Replacement for Lockdown Browser)
This session will review Verity, which is the replacement for Lockdown Browser:
- how to set up Verity in Canvas for both faculty and students
- how to set up a quiz with Verity
- the features and functionality of Verity quiz settings
- accessing and reading the Verity data dashboard
Yuja Basics/Refresh
This session will review how to begin using Yuja. Topics include:
- Library Organization
- Recording a Yuja video
- Editing Basics
- Closed-captioning Basics
- Sharing with students
Zoom Basics
Blackboard Collaborate will be sunsetting for the College on June 30, 2023. This session will review how to use Zoom for synchronous sessions.
