Recording with TechSmith Knowmia

This article will walk you through how to record using TechSmith Knowmia (**formerly known as TechSmith Relay), the lecture capture tool available to faculty. TechSmith is available on all classroom computers and can be installed to a personal device. Web Recorder

  1.  Open a web browser and go to https://mc3.techsmithrelay.com
  2. If prompted, click Log In and enter your college username and password
  3. Click Launch Capture

  4. Click the Record button and then use the intersecting arrows to identify the area you want to record.

  5. Once you have selected the area you want to record, the Recording Toolbar will appear.

  6. Click Record to begin recording your video. 
    • After clicking the rec button, you will be provided with a 3 second countdown before recording begins.
  7. Click Stopwhen complete
  8. A preview of your video will play.
  9. Click Upload
  10. You will receive an email when the video processing is complete.
    • Upload Complete

 

 

 

 

Classic Recorder

  1. Open TechSmith Knowmia on the computer in your classroom or on your device. 
  2. Click the Log In button
    • A web browser will open and direct you to the College login page. If you are already logged into the MC3 Portal, you will automatically be logged in.
  3. Switch back to the TechSmith Knowmia app to continue

You may either run a Test recording to verify that your video and audio are working properly or you can Record.

Test Recording

Note: The test button will initiate a 10 second test recording.  
This test recording allows you to verify that the recording is picking up your voice and the actions on the computer screen.  
 

  1. Click the test recording button.

  2. The test recording will begin.

  3. During the test recording, begin speaking as you would during 
    your presentation and showing what you would be doing on your computer screen.
  4. At the conclusion of 10 seconds, a new window will appear containing the video.

  5. Click the Play button to review the recording.  
    Note: Make sure to verify that the audio is acceptable and the correct screen content was recorded. Also, if you were using a web camera, make sure you see yourself in the preview window.
  6. When you are finished, click Close.
    1. Click the Audio button.
    2. All the available audio devices will be listed. Speak into the microphone and select the device based upon the input levels (green blocks) that are moving up and down as you speak. 

    3. After selecting the correct microphone, follow the Test Recording steps again to verify your audio. 

If there were no problems, you may begin recording. If you do not hear any audio in your test recording, complete the following:

Note: Prior to recording, make sure all content is open and ready to begin the presentation.    

  1. When you are ready, click the rec button.  

  2. After clicking the rec button, you will be provided with a 3 second countdown before recording begins.
  3. After the countdown, a new window will appear showing you the length of the recording.

  4. Minimize the window so it is not in your recording area. 
  5. Wait about 3 seconds before speaking.  
    Note: If using a PowerPoint, have the file ready, but don’t begin speaking until after hitting the rec button and getting the PowerPoint into presentation mode.   
  6. When you are finished recording, navigate back to the Recording box and click the Stop button.

  7. When you stop recording the preview window will display. You can Play the recording back and Trim unwanted content in the recording.

  8.  Under the Presentation Details box, enter the following information:

    • Title: Provide a title for your video.
    • Description: Provide a brief description of your video.
    • Folder: If you have created folders in your TechSmith Library, you may select a folder.
    • Captioning: Generate Captions
  9. Click Submit when you are finished. 
  10. A confirmation window of your recording submission will appear. 

  11. You will receive an email (to your College email) when your video has been process and is ready to view.

Note: If you do not receive an email, you can check the status and obtain the link to your recording by logging into TechSmith Knowmia via your internet browser by going to mc3.techsmithrelay.com
