Faculty - Setting up Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor is a webcam feature for Respondus LockDown Browser.

Respondus Monitor records students while they are taking an online, non-proctored test within Blackboard. When this feature is enabled, students are required to use a webcam and microphone with Respondus LockDown Browser. Once the test is complete, the instructor can review the exam and the video recording for any discrepancies.

You must use Respondus LockDown Browser together with Respondus Monitor.

Below are directions on how to set up Respondus Monitor for your Blackboard test.

Note: To add Respondus Monitor to your test you will need to go through the Respondus LockDown Browser settings.

1. Navigate to the course in Blackboard where you want to use Respondus Monitor.

Note: Make sure you have the test created and deployed in your Blackboard course first before you setup Respondus Monitor. You must have your test created prior to setup.

2. Under Course Management, click Course Tools. Then click Respondus LockDown Browser.

3. You will now see the home page for Respondus LockDown Browser. Click the Continue to LockDown Browser icon in the lower right corner.

4. Only the tests that you have created and deployed will appear in the list.

Click the small down arrow to the left of the test name. Then click Settings.

5. Select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.

Note: You can enter a password for the exam if you wish. This is optional. If you use this option you will need to provide the password to students. How you provide the password is up to your discretion.

6. You can determine if you want to add specific Advanced Settings options if you wish by clicking Advanced Settings

7. Under Monitor Webcam Settings select either:

  • Require Respondus Monitor for this exam: A webcam with no password is required.
  • Either Respondus Monitor or a proctored lab can be used to take this exam: A webcam and a password will be required to take this exam

8. Both options will require you to determine the Startup Sequence. The Startup Sequence is a series of steps that students must complete, in order, before starting the test using Respondus Monitor and LockDown Browser.

Most settings are optional and can be reordered by dragging and dropping them in the order that you wish.

Startup Sequence options include:

  • Webcam Check: Verifies that the camera and microphone on the students computer is working.
  • Additional Instructions: Provides specific instructions that relate to the exam and the features associate with Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor. These directions can be modified by clicking Edit Text.
  • Guidelines + Tips: Provides a list of guidelines and tips for a successful test taking experience with Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.
  • Student Photo: Requires students to take a photo of themselves prior to starting the test.
  • Show ID: Requires students to take a picture holding up their student ID. The language in this step can be modified.
  • Environment Check: Requires students to record a video showing the area around their computer to make sure it is free of distractions and materials that could help them complete the test.
  • Facial Detection Check: Verifies that the student's face is visible and detectable by the webcam.
    • If Facial Detection is selected then you will have the ability to select additional options such as:
      • Prevent students from starting the exam if face cannot be detected during Startup Sequence
      • Notify students during the exam if face cannot be detected (prompt for a fix) - This option is not recommended if you are allowing students to view notes or books during the test since their head would be turned away from the camera.

9. There are additional option available under Advanced Settings. Click the Advanced Settings option if you wish to add more option.

10. When you are finished click Save + Close.

You will now see your test in the LockDown Browser list. Both LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor will not be set as Required.
