Office 365 vs. Google Apps

Office 365 / Office 2019

Office 365 is a subscription service that includes the most recent version of Office (currently Office 2019.) Office 365 includes an online version of applications like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, plus extra online storage, called OneDrive.  Office 2019 is the physical application that you can download on to your computer’s hard drive and includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.

All students at Montgomery County Community College receive a free subscription to Office 365 which allows students to download the newest version of Office 2016 on their personal computer.  Office 365 can also be downloaded on your mobile devices such as Smartphones and tablets.  Your subscription through MCCC allows you to download Office on up to 5 devices.  The subscription is free as long as you are a current student at the college.  OneDrive is available to students up to 1 year after of no longer being a student.

Office 365 and 2016 are the primary applications used at MCCC.  If you will be submitting assignments through Blackboard, they will most likely need to be .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx files.

Google Apps

Google Apps is a free web-based software that includes Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides; a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation program respectively.  Additionally, cloud-based storage is included and is called Google Drive. The suite allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating with other users in real-time.

Students can use Google Docs if they prefer to create their documents, spreadsheets and presentations but it is recommended that they convert these files to their Microsoft counterparts (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) if submitting electronically as an assignment through Blackboard.
