Faculty - How to Create a Blackboard Announcement

Using the Announcement feature of Blackboard allows Instructors to place a message in the Blackboard course for students. The Announcement is the first thing a student sees upon entering their Blackboard course. The Announcement is emailed to the students’ email account.

1. If you are not on the Announcements page of your Blackboard course, in the course menu, click the Announcements button.
2. Click the Create Announcement button.

3. Fill in the "Subject" and "Message" fields

Note: The orange asterisk in Blackboard indicates a required field. Therefore, “Subject” requires an entry.

4. Optional: To link to the document within the Announcement, complete the following steps:

  • Add words to the Message textbox.
  • Highlight the word/ title corresponding with the attachment.
  • Click the attach file button (looks like a paperclip on a piece of paper).
  • Click the browse button and locate the file.
  • When finished, click the Submit button.

5. In Section 2: Web Announcement Options, determine the following:

  • If there is no date restriction, select “Not Date Restricted.”
  • If desired a date restriction, click date restrictions option and select the specific time period.

6. If you want the announcement to be sent out to all course users immediately, check the box next to Send a copy of this announcement immediately.

Note: The email is normally sent within five to 10 minutes of the announcement being posted.

Note: You can use the Course Link option to link your announcement to another area within your course, such as Course Information or Course Documents.

7. To link to another area in the course, complete the following steps:

  • Click the Browse button.
  • Select the area you wish to link to the Announcement.

Note: The course link is not sent in the announcement email Students receive.

8. When finished, click the Submit button.
