Using Blackboard Collaborate

Getting Ready for Blackboard Collaborate

Your Instructor may have stated that an online session of your course will be done using web conferencing software called Blackboard Collaborate.  So, what does that entail?

You can begin by checking their minimum system requirements.

More importantly, you will want to make sure your computer can run the software.  The first step is to make sure you have Java installed on the browser you are using.  Head to this link and click the Do I Have Java? link on the page.

Next, go to Blackboard Collaborate’s page for first-time users.

Step 1 will run a quick system check of your computer.

On that same page, Step 2 says Configuring your System.  You must click on the Configuration Room link according to the version you are using (v12). This is important to make sure you can hear the audio.  As their web site notes, you may be prompted to run programs during this process--be sure to run them and/or install them, as the case may be.  Also, be sure to go through the audio setup wizard.  (Check with your instructor if you will need a microphone to speak.)

Important Information for Audio.  Especially if your instructor plans to have YOU speak, you should obtain a headset with a microphone.   Do not use speakers because they may cause an echo during the session and it will be hard to communicate.

Step 3 offers Training and Resources. There is a good Online Orientation that presents an overview of the interface as a video. The On-Demand Learning Center (if somewhat intimidating at first glance!) covers almost everything needed, depending on what your instructor wants you do to during the sessions. In the On-Demand Learning Center, click the Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing link.

Finally, Step 4 (View our Support Portal) gives you a link to additional support at http://support.blackboardcollaborate.com.
