Keeping your operating system up to date is a requirement for all devices on the network. For this reason all systems that are capable should have automatic updates enabled. Instructions for several operating systems are below:

  3. Change settings

  5. Recommended updates
  6. Select "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates"

Windows 8 go to:

  1. Settings
  2. Change PC settings
  3. Update and Recovery
  4. Choose how updates get installed
  5. Important updates
  6. Recommended updates
  7. Select "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates"

Windows 10 Go to:

  1. Settings
  2. Update and Security
  3. Advanced Options
  4. Make sure the dropdown box says Automatic

Mac OSX:

  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple menu
  2. Select App Store
  3. Select Mac OS X and any other programs you want to update automatically

Ubuntu:

  • edit /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10periodic to read as such:
                 APT::Periodic::Update-Package-Lists "1";
                 APT::Periodic::Download-Upgradeable-Packages "1";
                 APT::Periodic::AutocleanInterval "7";
                 APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade "1";

An up to date operating system will be more secure than an out of date one as the developers of the operating system will create patches to respond to new security threats and vulnerabilities as they are found. Updates can also address bugs and glitches in the operating system so that the computer runs more smoothly.
