Faculty - Deploying a Test, Quiz or Survey in Blackboard

After a test, quiz or survey is created the instructor must make it available, or deploy it, in a location in the course for the students.

This article will walk you through how to deploy a test in Blackboard.

1. Click on the area in your course where you want the students to access the Test, Quiz or Survey.

For example, if you have your course content stored under Course Materials, click Course Materials so you can deploy the test in that space.

2. Click the Assessments tab located at the top of the page.

3. From the drop down menu, select Test or Survey (depending on what you want to deploy).

Note: If you want to allow students to use any of their other electronic devices, such as: iPad, iPhone, or Android users to take this test, you will need to deploy two assessments; one Test and one Mobile Compatible Test. Those students who have downloaded the Blackboard Mobile app will be able to take their test or quiz on a mobile device.

4. Under Add Test click:

  • Add Test: If you have already created the test you wish to add to your course use Add Test to click the test from the list to deploy it in your course
  • Create a New Test: If you need to create a test to deploy in your course

5. Click the Submit.

6. You will now be taken to the Test Information page. This is where you can set up the test, quiz, or survey directions and options for taking the test.

Give the test a name if you have not already and determine if you would like the test to open for students in a new window.

7. Under Test Availability determine if you want the following options:

  • Make the link available: Make the link visible and available to students.
  • Add a new announcement for this test: Do you want an announcement to be sent to notify students that the test is available.
  • Multiple Attempts: Determine if you want to provide students with multiple attempts for taking the test. If this option is not selected then students will only be able to take the test once.
  • Score attempts using: If you select the Multiple Attempts option you will have the ability to determine how the attempts will be scored
  • Force Completion: Force students to complete and submit the test in one sitting.
  • Set Time: Add a timer to the test if you only want students to have a specific amount of time to complete the test. If you select this option you can have the test Auto-Submit once the time is up regardless of where the student is in the test.
  • Display After: Pick a date and time when you want the test to be available to students. If you do not select this option the test will be available once you click Submit.
  • Display Until: Pick a date and time when you want the test to no longer be available to students. If you do not select this option the test will be available even past the date you told your students.
  • Password: You can password protect a test. You can determine how you will give the password to students. You can either provide it to them or if you have students taking the test in the Testing Center the password will be provided to them.

8. Under Test Availability Exceptions determine if you want the test to be available for a specific User or Group.

Note: This is not a required field.

9. Under Due Date, determine the test due date and time.

You also have the option to determine if you do not want to allow students to start the test if the due date has passed. If you do not check the box next to this option and you have added a due date then students will still be able to take the test, but it will appear in the Grade Center as Late.

10. Under Self-Assessment Options, by default the option Include this Test in Grade Center score Calculations is selected.

You can also select the option Hide results for this test completely from the instructor and the Grade Center. This option will not allow you to see any students grades, student answers, or results.

11. Under Show Test Results and Feedback to Students determine how and when you want students to see their results.

By default, After Submission is selected. You can choose from other options as well from the drop down menu.

You can also determine how students will see their score and the answers they selected for each question.

If you provide feedback to your students, be sure to check the box under Feedback so students can see your comments.

Finally, determine if you want students to see the questions they got incorrect.

12. The last step is to determine the Test Presentation.

Determine if you wants the test questions to be displayed as:

  • All at Once: Questions for the entire test are on one page.
  • One at a Time: Questions for the test are presented one at a time.

You can also decide if you want to allow students to backtrack or not by checking the box next to Prohibit Backtracking

Check the box next to Randomize Questions if you would like the test questions to be in a random order for every student taking the test.

13. When you are finished, click Submit.
