Faculty - Dropping Lowest Grade When Using a Total Column in the Blackboard Grade Center

It is possible to drop the lowest grade for a series of Quizzes, Tests, or Assessments when using a Total column for calculating a students final grade. This article will walk you through the steps for calculating a students final grade when dropping the lowest grade when using a Total column.

 

1. Go into your Full Grade Center.

 

 

 

 

2. Add another Total column by clicking Create Calculated Column located in the upper left corner. This Total column will be used to calculate the total grade for the series of Quizzes, Tests, or Assessments that you wish to drop the lowest score from. 

Note: Be sure to give this Total column a name such as "Quizzes Total" or "Tests Total" so you know this Total column is not reflecting the Total number of points earned in the course.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Scroll down to Select Columns. Next to Include in Total, check the button next to Select Columns and Categories.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4. In the Categories to Select box, scroll down and locate the Quizzes/Tests/Assignments Category. Click the small arrow to the right of the box to pull the Category over to the larger Selected Columns box. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5. Click the Drop Grades button and next to Lowest, type in the number of how many low quiz grades you want to drop.

 

 

 

 

 

 

6. Under Options, make sure Include in Grade Center Calculations is selected. Click Submit

 

 

 

 

 

7. Navigate to the Total column in your Grade Center that is calculating the students' final/current grade. Click the small gray down arrow next to the name of the column. Then click Edit Column Information

 

 

 

 

 

8. Scroll down to Select ColumnsNext to Include in Total, check the button next to Select Columns and Categories.

 

 

 

9.  In the Columns to Select box, select all of the columns in your Grade Center except for the individual Quiz/Test/Assignment columns in which you are dropping the lowest grade. Instead, select the Total column you created to calculate and drop the lowest Quiz/Test/Assignment grade. 

Then click Submit.
