Faculty - Blackboard Grade Center: Setting Weighted Grades

 

By default, a Weighted Total column is already in your Blackboard Grade Center. If you do not see a Weighted Total column you can add one by clicking the tab located in the upper left corner of the Full Grade Center that says Create Calculated Column

It is important that your Categories are setup before adding weights to your Weighted Total column. Below are directions on how to add weights to your Weighted Total column. 

 

1. Under Course Management in your Blackboard course click Grade Center then Full Grade Center.

2. Locate the Weighted Total column in your course.Click the small grade down arrow next to the name of the column. A pop-up window will appear. Click Edit Column Information

If you do not see a Weighted Total column, follow the directions below to add a Weighted Total column.

3. You will now be on the Column Information page. You can change the following information if you wish:

  • Column Name
  • Primary Display
  • Secondary Display*

 

*Note: The Secondary Display is only visible to the instructor in the Grade Center. The Secondary Display is not visible to students.

4. Scroll below until you see Select Columns. This is where you will enter the weights. 

In the Categories to Select box, locate and click the Category you want to add to the Selected Columns box to the right. When you click a Category in Categories To Select, you will see all of the assessments tied to that Category appear in the gray Category Information box. 

Once you have selected the Category, click the small arrow next to the Categories to Select box. The Category will then move into the Selected Columns box. 

Enter the weight (percent) for that Category and determine if you wish to have other settings when calculating this weighted grade. 

You weights should equal 100% when you are finished.

5. Scroll down to Options. Determine the settings you want to apply to the Weighted Total column:

  • Include Column in the Grade Center calculations: Makes the Column available for use in other calculations. if you select No, columns that have not be graded and have “null” values will be included as a zero grade until a grade is entered.
  • Show Column in My Grades: Shows the column in the students' My Grades space.
  • Show Statistics (average and median) to Students: Shows the Weighted Grade column statistics in My Grades.

6. When you are finished, click Submit.  

 



Create a Weighted Total Column

 

If you do not see a Weighted Total column in your course you can create a Weighted Total column. Before you create a new column, please be sure you scroll through and view the entire Full Grade Center. 

Below are directions on how to create a Weighted Total column in the the Grade Center. 

 

1. Under Course Management in your Blackboard course click Grade Center then Full Grade Center.

2. Put your mouse over the tab that says Create Calculate Column. A pop-up window will appear. Click Weighted Total Column

3. You will now be taken to the Column Information page. This is where you will fill out all of the information from steps 3-6 in "Setting the Weighted Grades" listed above.
