Faculty - Reviewing and Interpreting Respondus Monitor Proctoring Results


If you require students to take a test in Blackboard using Respondus Monitor then you the ability to review the video recording from when the student took the test. 

This article will walk you through how to access the video recordings if you have required students to take a test using Respondus Monitor.


1. Navigate to the course where you want to view the Respondus Monitor video recordings.  
2. Scroll down to Course Management in the left navigation menu and select. Course Tools. Then click Respondus Lockdown Browser.





3. A welcome page will appear. Click Continue to Lockdown Browser.





4. Click the down arrow to the left of the name of the test in which you want to add Respondus Lockdown Browser. Then click Class Results.





5. A roster of the students in your course will now be visible. You will see the following information:

  • Student Name
  • *Review Priority - Determines whether a student test warrants a closer look by the instructor. 
  • Date - Date the test was taken
  • Score (if test is setup with questions that auto-calculate the student score)
  • Duration of the test - the length of the test, in minutes
  • Facial detection % (if this option is selected upon setup) - The percent of time the the student's face we detected for analysis
  • Flags - The number of suspicious events or activity that occurred
  • Total Flagged Time - Total time for events that were flagged


*The Review Priority information is determined by:

  • Webcam video of the test taker - analyzed using facial detection, which is how flagged events like "Missing from Frame" are determined. 
  • Computing device and network used for the test - information from the computing device and network will generate information like video interruptions, auto-restarts of a webcam, mouse/trackpad/keyboard use, attempts to switch applications, etc. 
  • Student's interaction with test itself - data from the student's interaction with the assessment includes information such as when a test session starts and ends, when answers are saved, if the student exited the test early, etc.








6. Click the + next to the student's name to view more details on a specific student. The expanded details highlight the following:

  • Summary of key information
  • *List of Flags and Milestones
  • Video Playback and Controls
  • Timeline with flags (red) and milestones (blue)
  • Thumbnail images from video


*Flags are generated where a problem may exist. Milestones are general occurrences like when the exam started or when a question was answered. A list of different types of Flags and Milestones is as follows (please be aware that need flags and milestones are added. This is not a comprehensive list):


  • Missing from Frame - student not detected in video for a certain length of time
  • Different person in Frame - a different person who started the test may have been detected
  • Multiple persons in frame - multiple faces are detected in the video for a length of time
  • An Internet interruption occurred - a video interruption occurred as a result a of an Internet disruption
  • Video frame rate lowered due to quality of Internet connection - if a poor upload speed is detected with the internet connection, the frame rate is lowered for the video
  • Student exited LockDown Browser early - student used a manual process to end the test session early. A reason is provided by the student
  • Low Facial Detection - facial detection could not be run for a significant portion of the test
  • A webcam was disconnected - the webcam was disconnected from the computing device during the test
  • A webcam was connected - a webcam was connected to the computing device during the test
  • An attempt was made to switch to another screen or application - an application switching swipe or keystroke was attempted
  • Video session terminated early - indicates the video session was terminated unexpectedly and that it did not reconnect automatically before the test was completed by the student
  • Failed Facial Detection Check (if selected) - facial detection could not be achieved during the Facial Detection Check of the Startup Sequence 
  • Student turned off facial detection alerts - student selected "Don't show this alert again" when the facial detection alert appeared during the test. 



  • Question X Answered - an answer to a question was entered or changed by the student
  • Pre-Exam - the webcam recording that occurs between the environment check and that start of the test
  • Exam Start - the start of the test
  • End of Exam - the test was submitted

7. When you are finished viewing the results, you may exit the course or close your web browser.  





Important Things to Remember


Pre-Exam Checks are recorded as "webcam sessions."

If you require students to complete a Pre-Exam check (ensures students camera and microphone are functioning properly) than you may see multiple webcam sessions. These sessions indicate that the student has entered the pre-exam webcam check and are not the same as exam attempts defined by Blackboard.

The student can back out or quit the pre-exam check before beginning the exam. The exam will not begin until the student select "Begin Exam" at the very last step of the pre-exam check. 

Flags are not cheating.



 Flags and the Review Priority value do not determine whether a student has cheated or not. These are tools to help identify suspicious activities or situations where the data is too low of a quality to analyze. 


Facial detection is important.



 Numerous flagging events rely heavily on facial detection technology. If the student's face cannot be detected in the video it is not possible to determine if the test take is "missing" or "different." If a student's face is turned away from the webcam or cropped in the video (only see the student's eyes and forehead), facial detection rates will be lowered. Other issues that affect facial detection rates are baseball has, backlighting, low lighting, hands on the face, and certain types of glasses.



There are more "false positives" than "true positives."


 Flags that rely on facial detection are often incorrect (known as false positive). If a student is flagged as "missing" bu they are still visible in the frame, this would be a false positive. A "true positive" is a suspicious behavior that is correctly identified by the flagging system. Be aware that this is still fairly new technology.


Garbage in, garbage out. 


 You can achieve immediate improvement with flags that rely on facial detection by having students create better videos. The following guidelines will help students create higher quality videos:

  • Avoid wearing baseball hats or hats that go beyond the forehead.
  • If using a laptop, place it a flat surface, not your lap.
  • If your webcam is built into your computer, avoid making screen adjustments after you have started the test.
  • Do not lie down on a couch or bed while taking the test.
  • Do not take the test in a dark room.
  • Avoid backlighting situations like sitting with your back to a window.
  • Select a distraction-free environment to take your test. TV's and other people in the room can pull your attention away from the computer screen.
