Students - Tips for Recording a Quality Video while Taking a Test Using Respondus Monitor

If your instructor requires you to take a test in Blackboard using Respondus Monitor then you will need to make sure you setup your webcam to record a quality video. There are a number of steps you can take to ensure a successful testing session using Respondus Monitor.

The following article will walk you through how to take the appropriate steps for setting up a successful testing environment.

Note: You will know you are required to take your test using Respondus Monitor if the words "Webcam" are in the title of your test.

1. Avoid wearing baseball hats or hats that extend beyond your forehead.
2. If you are using a laptop to take your test make sure you place it on a firm surface like a table, not your lap.
3. If your webcam is built into your computer screen, avoid making screen adjustments after you have started the test. A common mistake is to push the screen back which will result in only the top half of your face being recorded.
4. Do not lie down on a couch or bed while you are taking your test. There is a greater chance you will move out of the video frame or change your position with the webcam.
5. Do not take the test in a dark room. If the details of your face do not show clearly during the webcam check, the video analysis is more likely to flag you as missing.
6. Avoid backlighting situations such as sitting with your back to a window. The general rule is to have the light in front of your face, not behind you.
7. Take your test in a distraction-free environment. Televisions and other people in the room can pull your attention away from the computer screen. Other people that come into view of the webcam may trigger flags by the system.
