Faculty - Tips for Checking that your Blackboard Grade Center is Calculating Accurately

 

One of the most common questions that is asked about the Blackboard Grade Center is how to make sure grades are being calculated correctly. There are a few things that you can check in your Grade Center setup to make sure it is setup to grade as you wish. Below are some things to check.

Check your Columns

Check the Points Assigned Per Assessment

Check the Weight Applied to your Columns (if using a Weighted Total column)

Check How you are Weighing Columns: Equally or Proportionally (if using a Weighted Total column)

Check your Categories (if using a Weighted Total column)

 

 

 

Check your Columns

Check that you have all of your Grade Center columns in your Grade Center. If you added or removed an assessment during the year/semester you will need to make sure you have the column added or removed from your Grade Center that student scores are calculating correctly. Below is an easy way to check your Grade Center columns. 

 

1. Go into your course in Blackboard.  
2. Under Course Management click Grade Center. Then click Full Grade Center.

 

 

3. Put your mouse over the Manage tab until a drop down menu appears. Then click Column Organization

Column Organization will give you a "big picture" of what columns you have/do not have in your Grade Center. 

 

 

 

 

Check the Points Assigned Per Assessment

Sometimes the point value you add to an assessment is off. Double check that the points associated with your assessments are correct. Below are directions on how to double check the points per assessment. 

 

1. Go into your course in Blackboard.  
2. Under Course Management click Grade Center. Then click Full Grade Center.

 

 

3. Put your mouse over the Manage tab until a drop down menu appears. Then click Column Organization

The last column in Column Organization will show you the Points Possible for each assessment in your Grade Center.

To change the points associated with an assessment navigate to the Full Grade Center and click the gray down arrow next to the name of the column. Then click Edit Column Information. Scroll down until you see Points Possible

 

 

 

 

Check the Weight Applied to your Columns

Note: The following only applies if you utilize the Weighted Total column.

It is possible that the weight you have associated with your Categories is off or incorrect. Double check that the weights you have listed match what is on your syllabus and what is represented in your Weighted Total column. Below are directions on how to check your weights.

 

1. Go into your course in Blackboard.  
2. Under Course Management click Grade Center. Then click Full Grade Center.

 

 

3. Locate your Weighted Total column and put your mouse over the name of the column until a gray down arrow appears. Click the gray down arrow and select Edit Column Information

 

 

4. Scroll down until you see the Select Columns space where you set up your weights. Double check that the weight percentage you have identified is correct.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Check How you are Weighing Columns: Equally or Proportionally

Note: The following only applies if you utilize the Weighted Total column.

You can determine how to weight your grades in your Weighted Total column You can either weight Equally or Proportionally. 

Equally: Applies equal values to all columns within a Category

Proportionally: Applies the appropriate value to a column based on its points compared to other columns in the Category.

It is possible that selecting the incorrect weight option is skewing your grades. Below are directions on how to check if you are weighted your grades in the option you desire.

 

1. Go into your course in Blackboard.  
2. Under Course Management click Grade Center. Then click Full Grade Center.

 

 

3. Locate your Weighted Total column and put your mouse over the name of the column until a gray down arrow appears. Click the gray down arrow and select Edit Column Information

 

 

4. Scroll down until you see the Select Columns space where you set up your weights. Double check that the correct option is selected next to Weight Columns

 

 

 

 

 

Check your Categories

Note: The following only applies if you utilize the Weighted Total column.

If you utilize the Weighted Total column in your course for calculating student grades and you notice your grades are off try checking your Categories. It is recommended that you setup your Weighted Total to calculate the weight by Category. It is possible that assessments could be missing a Category or are set to the wrong Category which can skew your grades. Below are directions on how to check your Categories.

 

1. Go into your course in Blackboard.  
2. Under Course Management click Grade Center. Then click Full Grade Center.

 

 

3. Put your mouse over the Manage tab until a drop down menu appears. Click Column Organization

You will now see all of your assessments that are in the Grade Center as well as the Category associated with them. To change a Category for an assessment, please view the following knowledgebase article, Faculty - Bulk Change Categories in the Blackboard Grade Center
