Students - Taking a Test with Respondus Monitor

Your instructor may require you to take a test using Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor. Respondus Monitor requires you to use a webcam to record yourself while taking a test. The recording ensures test security.

You can tell if your test requires Respondus Monitor by the words listed in conjunction with the name of the test. For example, "Midterm (**Webcam**) - Requires Respondus LockDown Browser." If your test only requires LockDown Browser, the word "Webcam" will not be in the title of the test.

This article will walk you through how to take a test that uses Respondus Monitor.

1. All tests that require Respondus Monitor also require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser.

Make sure you have Respondus LockDown Browser installed on your computer. If you do not have LockDown Browser installed, please read the following knowledgebase article: Students- Respondus Lockdown Browser: How to Install and Use.

Note: You are unable to download and install Respondus LockDown Browser on a Chromebook. Please contact your instructor if this applies to you.

2. Before opening Respondus LockDown Browser, close all programs you may have opened on your computer.

You must close out everything before opening LockDown Browser.

3. Open LockDown Browser.

4. You will now be taken to the Canvas login page. Enter you College username and password to login to Blackboard.
5. Navigate to the course where your test is located.

6. Click the test to open it. Then click Begin.

If your instructor requires a test password, a new window will appear asking for the Exam Password. Enter the password and click Begin Exam.

Note: If the instructor does not require a password, you will not see this box.

7. A Startup Sequence will now begin. The Startup Sequence was setup by your instructor. You may be asked to:

  • Agree to the Terms of Use
  • Perform a webcam check to ensure your webcam and microphone are functioning properly. The first time you do a webcam check you will be asked to allow Adobe Flash Player.
  • The remaining steps of this sequence will be determined by your instructor. They may include taking a photo of yourself, reviewing important directions, taking a picture with your student ID, or recording a short video showing your surroundings.

If you encounter any issues while performing any of the Startup Sequence functions, click Its not working for troubleshooting tips.

8. The test will begin as soon as you complete the Startup Sequence.
9. When you are finished taking your test, click Save and Submit.
