F.A.Q. - Multi-Factor Authentication

Below are frequently asked questions about Multi-Factor Authentication and it's purpose in relation to you.

Privacy Note: Enrolling in Multi-Factor Authentication does not give the College access to information on your personal device. Enrolling allows you access to College applications and services.



What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)? 

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) refers to an additional layer of security that is added to protect your account. 

MFA incorporates two forms of authentication: something you know (your password), and something you have with you (phone). The something you know is your password. If your password is exposed, your account is still secure because an attacker would need both your password and your phone.

Who is currently impacted by MFA?   

All college faculty and staff are REQUIRED to enroll in MFA to protect remote access to various systems including Microsoft Office365 (college email) when connecting from a personal device.

All college students have the option to enroll in MFA to safeguard their account.




How often do I have to reauthenticate? 

Once you have authenticated one time, you will not need to reauthenticate for Microsoft Office 365 until after every 14 days. 

You will need to reauthenticate on each device and each browser you use. 




How do I enroll in MFA? 

You can enroll in MFA by downloading the Microsoft Authenticator app or through text message/phone. Directions for both options are available on the following knowledgebase article; Enrolling in Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Enhanced Security




What are my authentication options? 

You will be able to choose a primary authentication method when you register, which you can change or update at any time. International users should use the Microsoft Authenticator Application via their phone. Current options that are available are as follows:


Verification Method Description


Mobile Notification via the Microsoft Authenticator App


A push notification is sent to the authenticator app on your smartphone asking you to Authenticate your log in. (This option is recommended for international users).


Verification Code via the Microsoft Authenticator App


The Microsoft Authenticator app will generate a verification code that updates every 30 seconds. You will be asked to enter the most current verification code in the sign-in screen.


Text Messages


A text message with a 6-digit code is sent to your mobile device that you will input to complete the authentication process.


Phone Calls


A call is placed to your mobile phone asking you to verify you are signing in. Press the # key to complete the authentication process. 






Will my device and location impact how I am authenticated via MFA? 

Your location and/or device will act as an additional authentication factor for MFA this means: 

  • Logins from on-campus will not receive MFA prompts 
  • Logins from College issued devices will not require an MFA prompt

You will only be prompted to authenticate when accessing College applications from a personal device.




I am concerned about my privacy.

What does it mean if I am prompted to register my device if I elect to use the Microsoft Authenticator app for authentication?

Registering your device gives you access to the College's applications/services. It does not give the College access to your device. 




How do I change or update how I want to be authenticated? 

Visit to update how you would like to be authenticated (i.e. phone call, text message, Microsoft Authenticator app). 




What if I am on-campus and I forget my phone at home? 

You will not need to authenticate while on Campus. While on-campus you will be connected to the College's network. This acts as your authentication. 




What if I am having difficulties enrolling in MFA or am having trouble using MFA for accessing College applications?
